Un-diva-like Kylie stuns hotel staff
Posted Sat, 22 Nov 2003

Sexy Aussie pop songstress Kylie Minogue left staff and management at the London's Hammersmith Apollo l — quite accustomed to the outrageous demands of stars — stunned.

Hotel staff are used to the impossible and outlandish requests of stars like Jennifer Lopez — who insists on her dressing room being completely snow-white, with specific candles costing at $25 each — and throws a tantrum the size of her bottom if she doesn’t get it, Sky News reports.

Kylie, however had one simple request — a kettle — so that she could boil her own water to make a cup of tea without having to bother anyone else.

"She wanted to be able to plug it in and not have to send people out to get her tea.

"Honestly, she's this global, iconic figure yet she's so un-diva-like," show executive producer Jeff Thacker told the Daily Star.

Kylie Minogue: Body Language

27.11.2003 By RUSSELL BAILLIE
(Herald rating: * * *)

Kylie would seem to be more entitled than most to do her bit for the 80s revival. She was, after all, there briefly first time round. But her 80s of 2003 with its retro electro-pop flavours is a whole lot more stylish than her Stock Aitken and Waterman years.

And while this has nothing quite as nagging as her mega-hit Can't Get You Out of My Head from the previous Fever, it feels a more cohesive album and sexier for it. The purring single isn't the only moment which can't decide between dancefloor and boudoir.

Elsewhere Kylie does Prince (Still), raps a bit without sounding stupid (Secret), veers confidently into R&B (Red Blooded Woman), and delivers at least one nutty house track (I Feel For You).

It might be dancepop-lite but Body Language shows that Kylie still does Kylie better than anyone.

Doing the Bardot - Kylie Minogue at the Hammersmith Apollo

Because it is accepted that Kylie Minogue makes the charts a brighter place, she enjoys exceptional critical leeway. Rarely taken to task over her voice (nothing a cigar habit and a couple of extra stone couldn't beef up) or her music (unexceptional apart from the singles), she embodies the concept of getting away with it.

In the spirit of giving something back, her live performances are always fantastic: Cameron Mackintosh couldn't stage a show with greater entertainment value than Kylie in full Persian-kitten pomp. This one-off was even a few degrees madder than usual. There is, after all, a new album, Body Language, to launch, and Britney Spears (whose CD is also out next week) to beat. We're told £1m went into it, and tickets were invitation only, heightening the sense of event.

It certainly looked expensive, incorporating Paris street scenes (in keeping with the Bardot-esque stripes and bouffy hair that accompanied her entrance), Matrix-like skeletal steel constructions and a very butch motorbike. And at its centre, Kylie, apparently in a constant state of sexual arousal. A cover of Je T'Aime started things as they meant to go on - arching her back, extending a provocative little paw to the front row, she gave the impression that it was only the presence of 12 dancers that was keeping her from peeling off her teeny costumes (four, over the course of an hour).

The music was, necessarily, almost an afterthought. The set was dominated by Body Language, which presented itself as a series of chilled-out ambles with not much in the way of tunes. The single Slow was the best - a writhing, slo-mo tease that was none the less eclipsed by the ones the crowd really wanted to hear. Hard, shiny versions of Can't Get You out of My Head, Spinning Around, It's in Your Eyes: these were what we were here for, and the sight of disco-pixie Kylie whizzing around was a reminder that absolutely nobody does pop with quite the same oomph.

Mr Baker Speaks

The reason for placing it in the Apollo was to hopefully recapture the intimacy and closeness of Intimate and Live, as at points on the last tour we felt the icon was in danger of overshadowing the person and personality. The theatrical stage always seems like the perfect home for Kylie, and allows for a very particular type of celebration of a very special bond that I know exists between her and her fans. She is Kylie. We are not talking about an untouchable ‘American’ style star invisible through an entourage of hundreds. She is the same girl I met ten years ago and the same girl that you all have loved, adored and followed, some for even longer than that. Saturday night is a moment that she will cherish for the rest of her life...we hope that it will be an equally special and memorable night for all of you...

Kylie's crisis of the 'pert bot'

November 21, 2003

Kylie Minogue at 35 - such a thing once seemed inconceivable. When she hit the milestone in May, the shock was severe for those of us who had assumed, Michael Hutchence and 15 years of CDs notwithstanding, that she was still about 20.

Kylie's reaction suggests she sees 35 as the thin end of a grim, inexorable wedge. She announced a few weeks ago that, henceforth, her "pert bot" (copyright: every British tabloid) will not be available for public inspection.

"I'm a 35-year-old woman, so I kept everything covered in my latest video," was her excuse.

How sad that she feels constrained by her age, which evidently has provoked a bout of dark-night-of-the-soul panic.

She went on to say: "The album reflects my life as a 35-year-old woman. I've slowed down the pace."

This smacks of aspiring to dignity, when probably she'd have rather drummed her elfin hooves and screamed, "Oh my God, I'm old!"

Your heart goes out to her, and to every female celebrity whose career depends on youthfulness. For all the brave stuff about 60 being the new 10, the mid-30s are still perceived as the dividing line between girlhood and Donatella Versace, whose relish for miniskirts and hair extensions adds about a century to her appearance.

If a 35-year-old wants to feel at all fashionable, there appears to be no real alternative to minis and little tops. That is, unless you believe American fashion magazines, which think women in their 30s should drop all pretence and aim for "classic elegance".

Not long ago, US Vogue quoted a socialite called Muffy or Buffy, aged 30, who said she "leaves jeans to the kids". With that attitude, she'll be completely grey by the time she's 36, believe me.

But Muffy didn't have Kylie's perfect bottomage, which makes all the difference.

So this is an appeal to Kylie and others entering the precincts of "middle youth": act your age. Classic elegance can wait till you're 90.

In the meantime, wear those hot pants with a bad attitude.

Kylie fans' black day

Covered up ... Kylie

HERE’S Kylie Minogue going overcoat the top, as usual. The pop star has vowed to stop flashing the flesh. But this is a step too far.
The 35-year-old singer was dressed in black for a TV appearance in Paris. Kylie, non! Oui want to see MORE.

Scott's report:

Hey there,

I said I would give an update of mt time at the Kylie ' Money Can't Buy ' concert so here it is.

Okay so I am back from my weekend in London, Kylie was just amazing and the show was spectacular to say the least.
I picked up my tickets in person from the Hammersmith Apollo box office and was accosted by strangers eager to buy my tickets as soon as I got outside. My magic envelope contained 2 tickets and a laminate with the words V.I.P on it , how chuffed was I ?

Anyhoo our hotel was just across the road, handy or what? I can highly recommend the Novotel chain of hotels , our room was only £69 for the night in West London and was well appointed , I was so excited to find an ironing table cum trouser press on the wall LOL. A minibar was dangerously located in the corner of the room too hehe.

Back to the show then, we arrived about 7pm after a couple of pre - gig drinks in the hotel bar (oh yeah we got a free drink voucher for the bar as well as a big bottle of mineral water delivered to the door of our room - you would think I was on commission for them ;-).

Got in after a fashion, lot's of queuing and TV stations interviewing the crowd, walked in to the Apollo and it was all standing , I was appalled at the people who were drinking and smoking inside, I am not used to that in a theatre.

At around 8pm Cat Deeley came on stage to announce the advert breaks which will be edited into the programme for ITV later this week. We were all asked to go mad as if Kylie had just fifnished a number and we were applauding it.

At 8.35pm Cat Deeley came back on stage and made us count down from 10 to 1 to get the show started. Kylie breezed through her set list with a truly amazing show with Video screens and wizardry I never knew existed. This show apparently cost £1million to stage.

During the show many celebs could be seen on their feet upstairs in the VVIP area , her sister Dannii, her man Olivier along with Will Young, Rachel Stevens, Mystiq and Harvey from So Solid Crew to name a few.

After the show we went into Soho in search of a pub, unfortunately we timed it badly and arrived at 10.55pm and they wouldn't let us in as last orders are at 11pm, goddamn antiquated English laws!!!

We were desperate for a beer so ventured back up Tottenham Court Road to G.A.Y which is a club night in the London Astoria. I took David round and gave him the tour of this huge club, we had a few drinks and danced to a couple of numbers , Holly Valance was due @ 1.30am but we left at 12.45am absolutely knackered.

We luckily managed to get a night bus back to Hammersmith costing only £1, bonus!!!

All in all a fantastic night in old London town.

Remember to look out for me on the programme , broadcast id on ITV1 @ 5.40pm on Saturday 22/11/03. Called Kylie Live.

Until next time

Love to you all.

Kylie Wows Fans With Sensational One-Off Show

Review by Paul Johnston, AOL News

POP sensation Kylie Minogue promised fans who attended her Money Can't Buy concert 'something old, something new, something borrowed and...some great surprises'. She certainly didn't disappoint.

Tickets for the free show were only available to competition winners and specially invited guests. The audience also included Kylie's French actor boyfriend, Olivier Martinez, and sister, Dannii.

Desperate Kylie fans outside London's Hammersmith Apollo, where the concert was held, were willing to pay hundreds of pounds in exchange for tickets, making this the most sought-after show of the year.

Kylie - famed for her extravagant stage entrances - opened the Money Can't Buy show perched on a beam suspended from the ceiling.

Her Brigitte Bardot-inspired outfit, similar to the one she wears on the cover of her new album, Body Language, set the tone perfectly for a concert teaming with French influences.

Against a spectacular backdrop of a huge illuminated Eiffel Tower and Parisian skyline, Kylie launched into two new songs - Still Standing and Red Blooded Woman.

However, it was Kylie's 2000 hit On A Night Like This and the accompanying An American In Paris-inspired dance routine which had even those in the circle seats up on their feet.

Classic hits Can't Get You Out Of My Head and Spinning Around were, without a doubt, the biggest crowd-pleasers of the evening.

However, musically, the highlight was the mash-up of Kylie's 1998 hit Breathe and Serge Gainsbourg's Je T'aime which was sensational.

An encore of Love At First Sight brought Kylie's 75-minute set to an end and left the audience gagging for more.

They could be in for a bit of a long wait - Kylie has ruled out touring until the end of next year at the earliest.

Kylie Minogue: Body Language

(Parlophone)

Helen Pidd

Buy Body Language at Amazon.co.uk

Kylie is so rock'n'roll. In her 16-year reign she has pooh-poohed every rule in the pop realm, yet still has her tiny bowling-ball booty parked firmly on the throne. Quit while you're ahead? Don't accept film roles in video game spin-offs (Streetfighter, for instance)? Never be photographed wearing a brim-only hat with your perm poking out at a jaunty angle? Pah! Such maxims mean nothing to Kylie. She is the ultimate music industry Weeble - she'll wobble, yes, but never fall.
For her ninth studio album, she has chucked out the chintz once more, turning her back on the dancefloor disco that filled 2001's Fever to create a slower-burning record that seems unlikely to spark any nationwide dance routines. Then again, it is all too easy to underestimate pop's own Thumbelina by judging her songs before you have heard them 50 times a week on the radio, down the wine bar and in the gym. Especially when Cathy Dennis is on the songwriting team.

Body Language finds Kylie partying like it's 1987 all over again, only minus the dubious millinery and Jason Donovan, taking inspiration from the likes of Kool and the Gang and Prince to pleasing if not always memorable effect. Still Standing is a magnificent blend of Prince's Kiss and Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer, littered with minxy little oohs from Kylie, rather as if she was watching some particularly foxy fireworks. Secret (Take You Home) boasts more than enough writing credits to form a netball team, yet somehow avoids the too-many-cooks pitfall with its Goldfrappy jerkings and 1980s vision-of-the-future sound effects. It does, however, feature what may well be Kylie's rapping debut: it may not be cripplingly embarrassing (see Geri's woeful attempt on the Spice Girls' Love Thing), but let's hope it's never replicated in a live situation.

Chocolate seems a likely future single, packed with saccharine innuendo and breathy vocals, but somehow sounds too dated to pack any punch in the age of Beyoncé and Missy Elliott. On Obsession, Kylie drops her trademark helium trill to adopt a gravelly rasp, as if she has gone back to her roots with Madge from Neighbours.

I Feel for You, meanwhile, melds Beat International-style breaks and a bit of crazy electric piano to make for a soulful number. Someday, featuring the lilting and loopy loveliness of Scritti Politti's Green Gartside, is as close to a chill-out track as Kylie has ever made, and indeed co-written. With its disorientating chord progressions it doesn't quite go in the direction you expect, and as such it is the album's stand-out moment. Problem is, as with the majority of other tracks - including, most disappointingly, the Dennis-penned After Dark - you would be hard pushed to dance to it, which could well be Body Language's downfall. Are we ready for a Kylie album to sit down and listen to at home?

The Undercover Review

Ever since Kylie's "Impossible Princess" album it has been difficult to keep up the "Oh she's just one step behind Madonna" attitude and she has become her own superstar. Six years and three albums later, she has taken over New York's pop pride and joy.

Releasing an album at such a high point in your career is of course necessary, but still a dangerous task. Rarely will it shoot you higher, often it will bring you crashing down faster than you made it to the top, but in this case it has given Kylie a tangent to work with. Much like Madonna's past two albums, "Body Language" leans towards the euro-trash sound, but won't sound so shockingly different that her current fans can't appreciate it.

The first single (and first track) lyrically embodies her newfound desire to ditch the "sexy" image (although the artwork doesn't…) as she sings "Slow down and dance with me, yeah, slow" over great bass lines and Human League style electro-melodies that only become more prominent as the track moves into 'Still Standing'.

'Secret |Take You Home|' features British hip hop superstar Ms. Dynamite (credited to her real name, Niomi McLean-Daley) co-writing, and presumably advising Kylie on her rap-breakdown not to include the line "I do yoga and palates and the room is full of hotties".

'Red Blooded Woman' gives a nod to Dead or Alive's brightest moment in the sun with the line "You spin me round round round like a record" before launching into the clever line "You'll never get to heaven if you're afraid to get high".

The lush vocals of Welsh producer Green Gartside grace 'Someday'. Gartside has worked with Madonna, Elvis Costello and Chaka Khan and couldn't be better placed than this smooth track. 'Loving Days' continues with this feel whereas the closer (for everywhere except Australia) 'After Dark' leaves the listener on a funky note.

For those of you who have picked up the album from this big brown land, you'll have the bonus track, 'Slo Motion' to bring you back down to earth while before being perked up once again when you inevitably begin this album again.

This week's pop, world, jazz and folk music releases

Kylie Minogue

Body Language, Parlophone, £13.99

Dazzlingly well produced: Kylie Minogue
How could Kylie possibly follow up Fever, her bestselling last album, which featured the immensely lovable smash hit Can't Get You Out of My Head and contained barely a duff track? By trying too hard to better it, is the answer. The honorary Brit's ninth album is, on first listen, a dazzlingly well-produced collection of songs that has you grooving by default. After a couple more plays, however, it becomes evident that gee-whizz production is no substitute for decent tunes. The writing and producing talent here is phenomenal: Ms Dynamite, electro legend Curtis Mantronik, Alisha's Attic singer turned songwriter Karen Poole, and Cathy Dennis, author of Can't Get You… Yet Kylie and her team appear to have sacrificed the quality and immediacy of the songs in order to create a super-kitsch orgy of 1980s nostalgia. The current single, Slow, rewrites Je T'Aime… Moi Non Plus in the style of Kraftwerk, while Still Standing even outdoes Beck in its wholesale pastiche of 1999-era Prince. All this sounds great, but the overall result is gimmicky when it's clearly intended to be inventive. It's brave, insofar as any commercial pop record can be described that way, but this time around, the fun-sized chocolate soufflé that is Kylie has been somewhat over-egged. Lynsey Hanley

First Report on Kylie's 'Money Can't Buy' one-off show in London last night

By Kabir on the Kylie@coollist.com

Tonight was one of the best shows I have ever seen from Ms Minogue. The gallery was flanked with stars, Will Young, Dannii sat next to Olivier, Harvey from So Solid Crew, and of course Brian Dowling!

Cat Deeley came on stage to do some links for the show when it is broadcast on ITV next Saturday.

The show opened with Kylie on a massive black bar suspended in the top of the theatre. Just like the cover of the Body Language album.

She sang old and new, Breathe, Can't get you out of my head, spinning around, on a night like this, love at first sight and in your eyes were all there. With new songs, Slow, Red Blooded Woman, Chocolate, Obsession, and a few others, she brought the house down. (i cant remember all the songs, Im still in shock!)

The costumes were amazing. Kylie had about 5 changes.....looking fabulous in everything. The show was flawless, choreography magical, and her singing was on top form!

The after party in the Hammersmith Apollo bar was not that great...they never are really. For the few that were given a gold laminate VIP, they were asked to stay for drinks. I saw Dannii there for a few minutes, but Kylie didnt show whilst I was there, and people started leaving quite soon after their free drink was finished.

No merchandise was available, just tickets and the laminate pass that was issued with the tickets. If you want one of those, be sure to keep an eye on ebay, as they are bound to surface there soon.

Tonight was a brilliant show, so make sure you tune in when it screens on television!

Kylie's coming home

KYLIE Minogue will bring the year's most ambitious tour to her home town in July.

Minogue has agreed on a string of US dates next February and has also signalled an intention to do Australian dates.

Sources close to Minogue said she has approved a preliminary list of dates for a world tour interspersed with long breaks to spend quality time with boyfriend, actor Olivier Martinez.

Tour dates presented to Minogue suggest a June and July run for her Australian shows, sources said.

Promoter Michael Gudinski will travel to London today to discuss Minogue's tour plans.

Minogue is said to be planning a hi-tech spectacle with "old skool" twists.

"It will be revolutionary," Gudinski said yesterday. "Kylie's shows have consistently got more intricate, more advanced and more hi-tech. She spares no expense and to her, the word impossible doesn't exist."

Her commitment to a US arena tour is significant, and marks a concerted push into that territory.

Minogue's latest album, Body Language, is cleverly trans-Atlantic, with hip hop-influenced tracks geared to the US market.

"It is exciting to see that, after all this time, she has committed to taking a sizeable tour to America," Gudinski said. "This is the first time ever for Kylie."

Minogue told the Herald Sun: "There is a whole lot of work ahead, but it's a pleasure to be able to create a show with material that is so different to anything I've done before."

Minogue's tour spearheads a list of strongly tipped 2004 tours by The Eagles, Cher and U2. Finalists from Australian Idol have also announced a February 6 show at Rod Laver Arena.

KYLIE MINOGUE RAPS POP Although well known for skimpy costumes and provocative poses, the Australian singer Kylie Minogue, 35, has criticized what she calls the "pornographing" of pop culture. In an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, she said, "When I see some of these hip-hop videos, I'm as horrified as my grandmother and think, `Oh God, what gross things are they doing there.' " She added, "In advertising and in lifestyle magazines, you see more and more of a pornographing of pop culture." The BBC reported that her comments were echoed with a new study at the University of Colorado that found that pop had become cruder, more self-centered and sex-oriented.

KYLIE Minogue was accused of hitting a bum note last night after a cheeky blast at “pornographic” pop videos.

The Aussie babe, who has made millions from flashing her shapely rear, slammed today’s steamy promos and vowed to cover up.

But her amazing outburst looked out of sync with HER string of saucy vids, which have thrilled fans for years.

Kylie, 35, told German mag Spiegel: “When I see some hip-hop videos I’m just as appalled as my grandmother. I think to myself, ‘My God, what sort of disgusting things are they doing’? My erotic ideal is more like Brigitte Bardot.”

Kylie: I just want a cuppa

Kylie ... shunned after-show parties

KYLIE MINOGUE shunned the after-show parties — and put her feet up at her hotel with a cuppa.

It topped off an unusually low-key night for the pop babe who covered up her curvy figure at the ceremony.

She told me: “I’ve had a great night but I’m tired and I just want to go back to my hotel and have a cup of tea.”

I hope Kylie isn’t going all thirtysomething on us now she’s settled down with actor boyfriend OLIVIER MARTINEZ.

Sipping tea is hardly rock ’n’ roll. I would have thought she’d be in the mood to celebrate — her ultra-sexy single Slow is set to top the charts tomorrow.

Kylie Minogue at U2's Hotel...

Sexy Aussie Kylie Minogue is in Dublin and ShowBiz Ireland has the real scoop to why the pocket sized star is here, and it's not the reason the tabloids have picked up on...

Kylie leaves U2's Clarence Hotel
Yes, Kylie is in fact in Dublin and the press are on high alert, but as usual ShowBiz Ireland has tracked her down to get these exclusive shots.

The Irish papers said this week that Kylie was in Dublin to hide out from the UK media after the "kiss 'n' tell" by her suicidal ex boyfriend James Gooding.

Kylie leaves U2's Clarence Hotel

But this is not the case. Kylie is in fact in Dublin to record some new material in BIFFCO studios in the city centre.

Although this may seem convenient considering all of the media attention at the moment BIFFCO is not the type of place you can merely turn up at the door and start recording, so her Dublin trip was planned well in advance.

Kylie flew into Dublin from Paris on Sunday night and is staying in U2's plush Clarence Hotel.

She is reported to be seeing a new lover, French man Olivier Martinez.
