IOL: Minogue helps tsunami orphans: "Kindhearted pop beauty Kylie Minogue is coming to the aid of tsunami orphans, while she continues to fight her battle against breast cancer.

The Australian singer has been in treatment for the disease since May. She wrote a letter to the British High Commission in Sri Lanka - a country devastated by the December tidal wave - asking for a young drama group to be granted entry visas to the United Kingdom.

The youngsters star in a play about their survival from the horrific tragedy and are hoping to perform it at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland next week.

Kylie says: 'I loved hearing the children's stories and I hope that people around the world will share my enthusiasm.'"

Doing it for the kids

Despite her own personal battle, Kylie has this week taken time to help a group of Sri Lankan orphans to fulfill their dreams of performing at this year's Edinburgh Festival, in a show Kylie has dubbed "a magical story full of hope and joy". Using her celebrity status for good yet again, she this time helped convince the British High Commission no less in pushing through the children's visas after difficulties with red tape.

Kylie helps the orphans act out tsunami tragedy

Scotland on Sunday, 24 Jul 2005

She is one of the world's most popular entertainers in the midst of fighting a battle against breast cancer. They are a group of tsunami orphans who triumphed over despair but fell foul of visa regulations on their way to the Edinburgh Festival.

Despite her health problems, Australian superstar Kylie Minogue has taken the time to help the Sri Lankan child actors to achieve their dream of performing at the world's biggest arts extravaganza.

Support from the 37-year-old singer has helped persuade UK immigration authorities to grant visas to the performers in time for the opening show of their play next week.

They are all orphans who lost their families when huge waves swamped their coastal villages during the Boxing Day tsunami in the Indian Ocean. But their chance to tell their story of survival to the world was threatened because their Sri Lankan passports were swept away amid the natural disaster.

A letter from Minogue helped persuade the British High Commission to let the actors into Britain. She has also agreed to contribute thousands of pounds towards the cost of bringing the children to Edinburgh in the hope that other sponsors will also come forward.

The play, Children of the Sea, was devised by Toby Gough, a festival veteran, and will have a month-long run at the city's Royal Botanic Garden.

Gough said he wrote to Minogue because of her huge popularity in Sri Lanka.

"I couldn't believe it when I got a reply giving her support for the whole project to be brought to the Edinburgh Festival. I sent it to the British High Commission which was considering the visa applications along with other supporting letters and I am sure it helped swing things our way.

"Then when she agreed to actually help us to meet the cost of taking the kids to Edinburgh, that was wonderful. The play is all about human survival so perhaps that struck a chord with what she is going through.

"When you think what she has on her mind at the moment, it is absolutely fantastic that she has taken the time to organise some support for us. The children have all written to her to say thank you."

Minogue, an Australian former soap star, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May, just after starting a world tour. She has undergone at least two operations and is currently in Paris undergoing fertility treatment in the hope that chemotherapy does not leave her unable to have children.

The Children of the Sea is based on Shakespeare's play, Pericles, about a fisherman who thinks he has lost his family to the sea only for them to be reunited years later.

Gough, the director, has adapted the theme of the play to cover the striking of the tsunami, which devastated the east coast of Sri Lanka killing 31,000, making 500,000 homeless and leaving thousands of children orphans.

Minogue has sponsored Amali Range, a 14-year-old orphan who takes the lead role in the production. Amali lost her father in the Sri Lankan civil war and her mother in the tsunami.

In a statement, the singer said she had agreed to help the Sri Lankan acting company because she was moved by their stories of survival.

"I loved hearing the children's stories and I hope that people around the world will share my enthusiasm for this wonderful project," she said. "The Children of the Sea is a magical story full of hope and joy and deserves to be the highlight of the festival."

Gough formed the idea for the play while touring Asia with his Cuban-style musical Lady Salsa, which he premiered at the festival. A senior Red Cross official saw the performance and asked him to take a theatrical production to the tsunami-stricken areas.

He held acting workshops in "displacement" camps for the homeless and recruited 15 actors aged between 14 and 20. They are now supported by a cast of adult actors and musicians and a Bollywood choreographer has helped devise the dance sequences.

Won't beleive it

I don't want to post this story but if it is true (and one can't be sure unless and until Kylie posts it herself), it makes me very sad.

MINOGUE 'SICKER THAN THE PUBLIC KNOW'

KYLIE MINOGUE

LATEST: Pop superstar KYLIE MINOGUE's cancer is worse than first thought, according to reports.

Minogue's sister DANNII recently reassured fans Kylie would make a full recovery, but sources claim her recent trip to a cancer clinic in Paris, France was for aggressive anti-cancer chemotherapy.

A source tells British newspaper the Daily Express, "Kylie is sicker than she is letting the public realise. Her body is clear of cancer cells but there is a chance it could come back because it's aggressive.

"She needs chemotherapy but has been putting it off for weeks because she wanted to try to have some eggs extracted and made into frozen embryos first.

"She wants to be a mum more than anything in the world."

Commentators in Minogue's native Australia were alerted when she abandoned Melbourne's highly respected Cabrini Hospital to check in Paris' Institute Gustave Roussy - the biggest cancer treatment centre in Europe, which promotes a holistic approach to the potentially fatal disease.

Australian media commentator MONIQUE BUTTERWORTH says, "The Cabrini is regarded as an excellent cancer treatment centre, so it was seen as strange that she decided to go to Paris.

"It's left people wondering if she's been told she's so seriously ill that it's best to go elsewhere for the finest treatment.

"We all love Kylie and we're very worried about her."

Password Lyrics - Kylie Minogue:

You've whet my appetite
I want a taste of you tonight
Got a look on me like a cat who's got the cream (Prrrrr)
I take you for a gambling man
I'll place my bets as high as I can
You may be the one
Who can realise my dream
Shall we see?

Chorus: Meet me in the bedroom at quarter past eleven
Say the lucky words I'm looking for and we'll be locking up the door
Baby, if you wanna be in my world
You've gotta know the password (password)
To make it right (to make it right)

Tell me you're thinking hard
I don't want this to fall apart
I got a feeling that we could just make a team
I'm careful with my heart
I'm a fussy girl and love's an art
Tell me that you're hiding something up your sleeve, please.

Repeat Chorus

Baby, if you wanna be in my world
You've gotta know the password (password)
I think you might (I think you might)

Understand I'm a lady
It's not the hand you've got but how you play it
Baby, what's the password? "

GLASTONBURY TRIBUTES FOR KYLIE

From her official website, kylie.com

At the end of their triumphant headlining set on Saturday night at Glastonbury, Coldplay announced that they wanted to pay tribute to "absent friends", specifically Kylie.

Chris Martin said "...as we all know, Kylie had to pull out because of her thing. You guys all paid to see Kylie, so we thought we'd honour her with this..." and proceeded to play an amazing version of 'Can't get You Out Of My Head'.

The band, who are label mates of Kylie, have met her many times. They also dedicated a song to "our friend Kylie Minogue" at their headlining show in New York last month.

Basement Jaxx, who stood in for Kylie as headliners on Sunday night, also played a version of 'Can't Get You out Of My Head' as a tribute both at The Wirless Festival in Hyde Park on Saturday night and on the Sunday at Glastonbury; and Shirley Manson of Garbage, also dedicated their final track to Kylie.

Kylie said today:

"I was deeply moved to hear about the tributes at Glastonbury. Though I'm desperately sad not to have been able to perform at the event, I was so happy to feel that I was, in a small way, still a part of it. My humble thanks to the artists and the crowd. I'm far away but I hope you felt the smile on my face and the joy it brought me. Hope a great time was had by all. Love Kylie."

Hi everyone! I haven't been on the list in forever,
but I wanted to see if anyone could do me a major
favor. I was just watching an absolutely wretched
video of the Andrew Lloyd Webber featuring, among
others, Jason Donovan and I was thinking about
"Especially For You." Which led me to think about the
adorable Kermit the Frog duet from "An Audience With
Kylie." Which led me to tear apart cases of old CDs
only to realize that I don't have an audio copy of
that track anymore and my computer was just entirely
refurbished and my files were deleted.

What I'm trying to ask is, does anyone have a nice
audio copy of An Audience With Kylie, or just the mp3
of the Kermit duet? I used to have all of them, via
www.confide.co.uk (which sadly is no more) and now I'm
at a total loss. I was particularly fond of the
different versions performed, like BTDYK with Adam
Garcia and the like. All the live mp3 performances I
seem to have left are "Rescue Me" from Don't Forget
Your Toothbrush and "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best
Friend" from the Fox Studios opening. If anyone needs
those, just let me know, and I'd really appreciate any
help with the "An Audience With..." audio.

Thanks so much guys!

Adam
