Kylie fight in Christmas singles race

Wed Dec 15, 2004 12:23 PM GMT

LONDON (Reuters) - Pop queen Kylie Minogue is in a race for second place on the Christmas singles chart now that the reworked Band Aid charity song "Do They Know It's Christmas" is all but guaranteed the coveted number one spot.
Bookmakers William Hill stopped taking bets on the Band Aid single to become the top Christmas tune two months ago. They now tip Kylie's upbeat "I Believe In You" and the Ronan Keating and Cat Stevens duet "Father and Son" as the most likely runners-up.

"Band Aid is outselling Ronan Keating and Kylie by five to one on a daily basis so it's absolutely surefire to be number one," Rupert Adams, a William Hill spokesman, said on Wednesday.

"In terms of number two, if Father and Son wins we'll probably have a nigh on six figure payout," Adams added.

But some stiff competition could come from Kylie Minogue who jumped straight into the No. 2 spot in last week's charts with her latest release.

"It's neck and neck at the moment," said Gennaro Castaldo, a spokesman for HMV. "My feeling is it's likely to be Kylie Minogue. It's a very lively, great song -- very catchy and likely to be played at the parties a lot."

"The Ronan Keating song is very melancholic and mournful. Although it sometimes plays well at this time of year it doesn't necessarily have the kind of zest you want for a Christmas song."

Morrissey's "I have forgiven Jesus", Bo Selecta's double A-side "Proper Chrimbo" and rapper Ice Cube's "You Can Do It" are also long-shot contenders, William Hill said.

The contest for top Christmas album is less clear cut. Bookies say British crooner Robbie Williams holds a slight edge over Irish rockers U2, who recently topped charts around the world with their "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" album.

Ooh and aagh for Kylie

Racy ... Kylie Minogue in her transparent dress.

A TWISTED ankle was nothing to the embarrassment Kylie Minogue suffered in a swing through European TV shows to promote her new single.

The Aussie pop princess was in agony after wrenching her ankle during filming for a German television show on Saturday.
Minogue was performing I Believe In You when she slipped over.

"It was a nasty fall," an onlooker said. "She slipped on her heels and tumbled.

"But she was more worried about exposing herself because her outfit was very flimsy."

Kylie had every reason to be concerned after revealing more than she intended during a spot on Italian TV a day earlier.

The stunning songbird wore such a sheer green chiffon top during the performance that her right breast was there for viewers to see.

The 36-year-old had recently insisted she would stop displaying so much of her flesh and get rid of her sexy hotpants - much to the dismay of her male fans.

She has also hinted she is ready to ditch the music scene and start a family as she moves towards a more wholesome image.

But that plan appears to have been put on hold with Minogue aiming to top the UK singles chart this week with I Believe In You.

Last week Minogue was nominated for a Grammy in the best dance recording category for her track Slow.

Her Fever album debuted at No. 3 and went onto sell more than one million copies in the US.

The album's later US singles, In Your Eyes, Love At First Sight and Come Into My World helped Kylie establish a presence in the mainstream American market and in February she won her first ever Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording for Come Into My World.

Kylie Minogue: Kylie Minogue has the worlds best legs

Kylie Minogue has won another accolade to rank with having the best bottom in showbusiness - she apparently has the best legs, too.

The 5ft singer topped a poll to find the celebrity with the most perfect pins, fending off competition from longlimbed beauties such as Cameron Diaz and Naomi Campbell.

Shrek star Diaz legged it into second place and Hell's Kitchen winner Jennifer Ellison came third in the Gillette razors survey. "

Kylie Minogue: Read Kylie Minogue's daily rituals

November 23, 2004, 11:20:31

Kylie Minogue has confessed her life is ruled by superstition.
The pop babe, who is dating French heartthrob actor Olivier Martinez, has confessed she carries out a string of daily rituals in order to guarantee her good luck.

She said: 'I should be in the film 'Bewiched' instead of Nicole Kidman because that's what my life is like.

'I start each day by turning the teapot three times clockwise and once anticlockwise. It brings me luck and I've had plenty of that over the years.

'I know it's all a bit spooky. I do other things too - I don't walk under ladders and I throw salt over my shoulder.'

Meanwhile, the 35-year-old star has revealed that she signed-on for benefits after leaving school.

Kylie, who has had six number one singles in her 16-year pop career, admitted she registered for unemployment allowance as a teenager ecause she feared she wouldn't make it as an actress - but believes that her superstitions helped cement her success.

She is quoted by Britain's The Sun newspaper [there's an impeccible source for you!] as saying: 'I was intending to become an actress so it was standard practice to sign on for it.

'As it happens, maybe due to the teapot thing I made an OK living out of show-business.'"
